Graywolf Literary Salon: Writing with our Ghosts
On Thursday, September 28, 2023, Graywolf Press will host the Graywolf Literary Salon: Writing with Our Ghosts, an evening of intimate conversations about the enduring presence of the past, the relationship between personal and collective memory, and the inheritances that shape our futures. This year’s lineup of featured authors includes Roger Reeves (Dark Days: Fugitive Essays), Shannon Sanders (Company), and Sally Wen Mao (The Kingdom of Surfaces), who will be in conversation with Carmen Giménez, Graywolf’s director and publisher.
The first in-person Graywolf Literary Salon since 2019, this year’s event will be hosted at the The Grand 1858 at the Minneapolis Event Centers (212 Second Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414). The $50 “Bookmark Ticket” includes one free drink, a sweet treat, and admission to the program and book signing. The $150 “Publisher Ticket” includes a private reception with drinks and appetizers, signed books by the featured authors, and front-section reserved seating for the program. The Publisher reception will begin at 6:00pm CT and doors will open for the main program at 7:00pm CT. We are also pleased to offer sponsorship opportunities at a variety of donation levels. About the Authors
Roger Reeves is the author of two poetry collections, King Me and Best Barbarian, winner of the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. His essays have appeared in Granta, the Yale Review, and elsewhere. He is the recipient of a Whiting Award and teaches at the University of Texas at Austin. Reeves’s Dark Days: Fugitive Essays (August 2023) is a crucial book that calls for community, solidarity, and joy, even in—especially in—these dark days. Vulture recently called it “stunning” and applauded how Reeves “captures the sorrows inherent in the way we live today even while keeping a keen eye toward opportunity for joy.”
Shannon Sanders lives and works near Washington, DC. Her fiction has appeared in One Story, Electric Literature, Joyland, TriQuarterly, and elsewhere, and was a 2020 winner of the PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. Her story collection Company (October 2023), which Danielle Evans called “brilliant and immaculate,” is a richly detailed, brilliantly woven debut about the lives and lore of one Black family.
Sally Wen Mao is the author of two previous poetry collections, Mad Honey Symposium and Oculus, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. A former fellow at the New York Public Library Cullman Center, she lives in New York City. Morgan Parker calls Mao “a consistently inspiring and exciting voice,” and her new book, The Kingdom of Surfaces (August 2023), is a virtuosic collection that examines art and history to frame an important conversation on beauty, empire, commodification, and violence.
